Peter Massa was elected North Arlington's nineteenth mayor on Tuesday, November 7th, 2006. He will serve a four-year term of office ending December 31st, 2010.
A life-long resident of North Arlington, Mr. Massa attended local schools and is a graduate of Queen of Peace High School.
A father, husband and homeowner, Mayor Massa resides at 38 Eighth Street with his wife Val. The Massa's have two adult sons, Rich and Steve.
Massa began his career in law enforcement as member of the Bergen County Sheriff's Department under the leadership of the late Sheriff, Joe Job. Massa later became a member of the North Arlington Police Department where he retired with the rank of sergeant. Massa also served as president of the North Arlington Police Benevolent Association (PBA #95).
Upon retirement, Massa became a member of a bi-state law enforcement agency where he currently serves in the rank of captain. This agency is responsible for port & homeland security as well oversight of organized crime activity.
In 1990 Massa was elected as a member of the North Arlington Board of Education. He was elected vice-president of the board in 1991 and president in 1992. Massa was re-elected to second three-year term in 1993.
During his tenure, Massa was part of the only successful school renovation project that received overwhelming voter support. In addition, Massa engineered two consecutive, no tax increase budgets while significantly increasing student achievement and performance.
Massa earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Public Administration from Rutgers University. A part-time college instructor, Massa has taught courses in Criminal Justice for over two decades.
Elected to the borough council in 2004, Mayor Massa is the only resident to ever serve as school trustee, school board president, councilman and mayor.
Mr. Massa became a candidate for mayor in the Spring of 2006 opposing the Encap agreement, random development, eminent domain seizure and the construction of low income housing.
