Tribute to a Hometown Hero

Massa leads community in park rededication in memory of former NYPD Detective James Zadroga

North Arlington paid tribute to one of it's own Sunday afternoon with a moving ceremony that rededicated Skyline Park on Schuyler Avenue to the memory of fallen 9/11 responder, James Zadroga.

Mayor Peter Massa, gave a moving and graceful speech on the meaning of sacrifice, heroism and bravery.

"For James Zadroga's courage didn't occur in a single moment or act, but he demonstrated this courage day after day, hour after hour as a search & rescue, as well as a search & recovery volunteer at Ground Zero for weeks after the devastation of September 11, 2001. For James to ultimately risk his own life to search for others is the kind of courage and heroism that few individuals will ever demonstrate in the course of any human endeavor," noted the retired NAPD sergeant and current mayor.

Several members of the New York City Police Department as well as member of the NAPD and Volunteer Fire Department were on hand to give the appropriate and respectful recognition James Zadroga deserved.

In addition the Mayor & Council, Monsignor Walter Fradrowski participated in the blessing of the stone and benediction. Councilman Albert Granell served as Master of Ceremonies and council members Salvatore DiBlasi as well as Joseph Bianchi played an active role in the event's arrangements.
